First Follower: Leadership Lessons from Dancing Guy.
Leadership Lessons from Dancing Guy.
This is one of my favorite videos: Leadership Lessons from Dancing Guy.
From Youtube: If you’ve learned a lot about leadership and making a movement, then let’s watch a movement happen, start to finish, in under 3 minutes, and dissect some lessons:
A leader needs the guts to stand alone and look ridiculous. But what he’s doing is so simple, it’s almost instructional. This is key. You must be easy to follow!
Now comes the first follower with a crucial role: he publicly shows everyone how to follow. Notice the leader embraces him as an equal, so it’s not about the leader anymore – it’s about them, plural. Notice he’s calling to his friends to join in. It takes guts to be a first follower! You stand out and brave ridicule, yourself. Being a first follower is an under-appreciated form of leadership. The first follower transforms a lone nut into a leader. If the leader is the flint, the first follower is the spark that makes the fire.
The “Dancing Guy” is a man dancing energetically and unselfconsciously at a music festival. While he may not be a traditional leader, there are several leadership lessons that can be learned from his example:
- Be passionate: The Dancing Guy is clearly passionate about his dancing and is not afraid to let loose and have fun. This enthusiasm can be contagious and inspire others to be passionate about their work as well.
- Be authentic: The Dancing Guy is not trying to be anyone other than himself, he is just enjoying the moment and being true to himself. Leaders should strive to be authentic, rather than trying to be someone they’re not.
- Take risks: The Dancing Guy is not afraid to take risks and look silly. Sometimes, leaders need to take risks and try new things, even if they may not always be successful.
- Lead by example: The Dancing Guy is a great example of how to have fun and enjoy the moment. He leads by example and shows others that it’s okay to let loose and have a good time.
- Embrace change: The Dancing Guy is open to new experiences and embraces change, he is not afraid of trying new things. Leaders should also be open to change and be willing to adapt to new situations.
- Be positive: The Dancing Guy is having a positive attitude, he is not shy to express his joy and positivity. Leaders should strive to have a positive attitude and inspire others to do the same.
- Be resilient: The Dancing Guy is not affected by others around him, he is dancing regardless of the crowd and the situation. Leaders should strive to be resilient and not be easily discouraged by challenges or setbacks.
- Be open-minded: The Dancing Guy is open-minded and embraces diversity, he is dancing with people from different backgrounds and different cultures. Leaders should also be open-minded and embrace diversity in their teams.
It’s worth noting that these leadership traits can be applied to any field, not just dancing, and can be useful for any leader who is looking to inspire and motivate their team.
